Botox therapy for wrinkles is an injection treatment designed to reduce facial expression lines by targeting the muscle that is contracting beneath the skin. Wrinkles are lines in the skin that result from repetitive muscle contraction over time. So, by relaxing the muscles that are contributing to wrinkles, the skin above the treated area will appear smoother.
Areas that can be treated with Botox to reduce or prevent the appearance of wrinkles include:
Frown lines
Crow’s feet
Forehead lines
Bunny lines
Lipstick/Smoker’s lines
Chin crease/dimpled chin
Marionette lines
Additionally, Botox can provide a subtle brow lift and make the lips appear slightly fuller or reduce a gummy smile.
Botox treatment is temporary and will need to be repeated once the effects wear off.
Botox can also be used therapeutically to treat the symptoms of temporomandibular disorder by relaxing the muscles that are responsible for Bruxism (Grinding).
Botox injections are often confused with fillers. However, their purposes are quite different.
Botox | Fillers |
Relaxes muscles underneath the skin to make the skin appear more smooth | An injectable gel that fills voids and replaces the lost volume that occurs with age |
Goal is not to change appearance, but to give a more rested/relaxed appearance | Enhances facial volume and can be used to change appearance if enough volume is added (ex: bigger lips or cheeks) |
Prevents formation of new wrinkles with continued use | Does not prevent wrinkle formation but can reduce the appearance of static wrinkles |
